Hokitika Gorge & Lake Kaniere

Drive or bike out to the Hokitika Gorge. And then come back to town via Lake Kaniere. The Hokitika Gorge and Lake Kaniere trip is about 80 km long. On a nice day you can see beautiful reflections on the lake, take a short walk to Ship Cove, or a longer walk on the Lake Kaniere Walkway, drive or ride a bike to Dorothy Falls. Lake Kaniere is a place for, boating, water skiing, picnicking and fishing.

Lake Kaniere Walkway

Time - 4 Hours one way. The track starts at the southern end of the lake. The track is a 4 hours long and that passes along the western shore of the lake. OK for people of average fitness, must have strong walking shoes. There are picturesque bays and  forest streams and amazing lakeside forest. The track ends at Sunny Bight at the northern end of the lake.

Mt Tahua 

About  7 Hours Return.

Starting from Hans Bay, this is a steep climb  to the peak of Mount Tahua (1125m). Boots are essential, and the trip is for fit people only. Take warm clothing, food and drink. Attempting the track in bad weather is not a good idea. From the top there is a beautiful panorama of the Southern  Alps and Lake Kaniere. To the west you can see the coastal plain and Hokitika.

10 kms south of Hokitika you will find Lake Mahinapua.
This is a beautiful lake and is very popular for yachting. 
With beautiful scenic views of the Southern Alps.
There are also short bush walks.

Other Day Walks

You can go for nice day walks up the Arahura River to the Cesspool swing bridge.
The Styx River, the Toaroha River or the Hokitika River.
All of these rivers are good for fishing, white water rafting and kayaking.
